2/1 – Riverside (Middle School Race)

Portland Nordic Middle School team hosted a 3km skate race at Riverside Golf Course yesterday winning the girls team event and finishing second in the boys event behind Freeport in a field of six schools.



Portland skier Frannie Freeman won the girls race with a time of 10:56.5 ahead of York skier Elise Creagan (11:21.3). Freeman’s teammate Zuzia Varney finished in third with a time of 11:30.2 and was followed by her teammates Meribel Collin and Ally Butts in fifth and sixth respectively. The Portland girls had a team score of 15 points, followed by Maine Coast Waldorf School with 39 and Falmouth with 58.

Over the course of the season Portland Nordic Middle School girls are undefeated as a team and have had at least three skiers finishing in the top five in each race.

In the boys event Falmouth’s Nate Livengood continued his winning streak finishing with a time of 9:18.8 ahead of Portland’s Ben Horrisberger (9:42.9). Samuel Robinson of Freeport finished in third with a time of 10:41.5. Portland’s Daniel Niles and Luc Dietlin finished fifth and sixth sandwiched between four Freeport skiers. Freeport won the boys team event with 22 points, followed by Portland with 26 and Maine Coast Waldorf School with 51.

“There were over hundred middle school skiers out there today all giving their all,” said Steve Niles coach of the Portland Nordic middle school team. “Given the weather we’ve had the conditions were fantastic and the course we laid out helped build confidence for many of the skiers new to the sport.”
