Our Programs

Bill Koch League

On Saturday mornings at the Riverside Golf Course we teach kids in K-8th grade, of every ability level, the basics of cross-country skiing in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere.  Our program is part of the New England Bill Koch League, the largest cross-country ski program for young people in the United States. For more information about the Bill Koch League contact info@portlandnordic.org.

Middle School Program

Through a partnership with Portland Public Schools, we operate the Middle School Program. Open to 6th–8th graders of any skiing ability from all Portland middle schools, the program is designed to help new skiers learn the sport while providing support for more advanced racers to excel in a fun and semi-competitive setting. Skiers will alternate between both "skate" and "classic" techniques (see our FAQ page for more information about the basics of cross country skiing) and learn to properly care for their equipment.

Informational sessions for interested skiers and families are held in early November. We begin our season with dryland practices in December; the on-snow racing season begins in early January. Skiers may furnish their own equipment or rent through our Lease Program.

For more information on the program contact mscoach@portlandnordic.org.

Community Programming

Throughout the winter season we host Night Skis at Riverside. These social gatherings are geared toward skiers of all abilities and are led by our coaches and volunteers. These evenings are a great opportunity to get some technique pointers, meet other skiers, and enjoy some kilometers in a relaxed setting. Follow us on Facebook and join our mailing list to keep up to date on Nordic Ski Nights’ dates and times.
