2/8 - Riverside (MS Race)
The Portland Nordic hosted a middle school 3km classic race at Riverside Golf Course with the Portland Nordic Middle School boys and girls winning both team events and the boys taking the top three spots in a field of four schools.
The girls race was close from start to finish with Portland’s Zuzia Varney (12:04) coming in just ahead of York skier Elise Creagan (12:20). Varney’s teammate Frannie Freeman finished in third with a time of 12:27 and was followed by Alanna Nataluk of Fryeburg (12:32) and Meghan Cunningham of Portland (12:54) rounding out the top five.
The Portland girls finished with a team score of 13 points, followed by York with 43, and Fryeburg with 57.
The Portland Nordic Middle School girls continue to be undefeated as a team and have had at least three skiers finishing in the top five in each race thus far this season.
In the boys event Portland swept the podium with Ben Horrisberger (10:48) winning, Daniel Niles second (12:11) and Luc Dietlin in third (12:15). The Portland boys won the team event with 12 points, followed by York with 32 and Fryeburg with 44.
This was the fifth race of the middle school season. Next week, racing heads to Libby Hill in Gray for a classic technique race, the last race of the season before State Championships.
